How to Get off Cocaine—Without Rehab

The problem with cocaine isn’t the euphoria that it makes you feel, it’s the damage that’s left behind once the drug has worn off. At the physical and psychological level, cocaine will always do more harm than good. Many people decide to quit as they realise that whatever little satisfaction they get from using the drug doesn’t compare to the damage it causes in their lives and those close to them. Even if cocaine wasn’t illegal, it’s still quite expensive and does a lot of damage to the body organs. Unfortunately, quitting cocaine is not a simple task once you’ve become dependent. Many users may not want to go to a rehabilitation centre but may still want to kick the habit. This approach is called going cold turkey and this is how you could do it.

Quitting Cold Turkey

For many other drugs, quitting cold turkey isn’t advised under any circumstances. Try to give up alcohol addiction, for instance, without proper care can easily result in death. However, cocaine doesn’t have any physical withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting or shaking. This makes it partially safe to give up the drug cold turkey.

However, the psychological withdrawal symptoms that come with giving up a cocaine habit shouldn’t be under estimated under any circumstance. At any point during the detox period, you could be dealing with:

For example, a heavy user may not be in the best health to attempt quitting cold turkey.

Step 2: Have Support

Giving up a drug can feel like a very lonely experience especially if the habit has damaged many of your past relationships. However, at this stage, you’ll need all the support you can get. Fighting the psychological symptoms will require someone who’ll be able to check up on you and see how you’re doing at any given moment. Let someone know about your plan to quit. It should be someone reliable and one who doesn’t use.

Step 3: Find a Support Group

Before you even try quitting you should start thinking about long-term support. Even after the initial withdrawal symptoms have worn off, there are many challenges waiting ahead. Under the right circumstances, the temptation to fall back into old habits can be hard to resist. Being in a 12-step program can help.

Step 4: If the Going Gets Too Tough, Go to a Rehab Centre

There is no shame in not being able to quite cocaine cold turkey. If you’re overwhelmed, check yourself into a rehab centre.
